acoustics
In recent years I have been spending an increasing amount of time backing up my empirical knowledge of sound and instruments with a more scientific understanding of what is ultimately behind a capturing sound.

While the current science on this still leaves us with many riddles, it has recently made significant steps and does show us more and more insights. Importantly it also gives us practical tools to use in our workshops to improve our instruments.

For many years I have been following the current violin acoustic research and since 2004 I have regularly attented the annual acoustics workshop inOberlin, Ohio.

Since 2007 I have been taking sound radiation measurents of violin, violas and cellos. Also since that time I have been taking modal analysis measurements on violins and cellos. This is currently in a phase where it moves from the fact finding stage to a more practical stage in which it starts giving me advice on what to do with a particular instrument.
